Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games: The new Longines Hydroconquest

So it will soon be that time again, when the whole of the country will be cheering for Team England in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Hasn’t the last 4 years just flown by? It only feels like yesterday since me and my family were watching the last Commonwealth Games. If you’re not familiar with the Commonwealth Games it is a sporting event involving countries who were originally under British rule a.k.a. the Commonwealth, which occurs every 4 years. This year the games will be held in the city of Birmingham which is very close to home for us here at The Watch Village, so we will definitely be watching along.

You’re probably wondering how the Commonwealth Games is linked to watches. Well, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have once again partnered up with the luxury Swiss watch brand Longines as the Official Timekeepers. This year not only marks the 190th anniversary of Longines but it also marks the 60th anniversary of Longines' association with the Commonwealth games, which first began at the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games. To celebrate the long-lived partnership, Longines are releasing a limited edition Commonwealth Games watch named the Hydroconquest XXII Commonwealth Games. So without further ado let’s take a closer look at this special watch.

The Hydroconquest XXII Commonwealth Games (L3.781.4.59.6)

As you may have already guessed by the name this watch is part of the Hydroconquest collection, which is a unisex line aimed at those who want a high performance sports watch, however the Commonwealth version is much more special as only 2,022 pieces are being made. This special edition watch will retail at £1,600 which is only £100 more expensive than the standard watches in the Hydroconquest collection.

The design of the watch doesn’t stray too far from that of the original Hydroconquest watches, with the main differences being the pops of colour throughout the bezel and dial. The dial has the classic large number hour markers at the 12, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, and circles marking all of the remaining hour positions, all of which are decorated with their white Swiss Super-LumiNova. The minute track is what really makes this dial pop, as it's coloured to match the logo of the 2022 games. I think this stands out beautifully against the sunray black dial. There is also a date window at the 3 o’clock position, which is surrounded by a lime green frame which really ties into the coloured minute track.

The silver polished hands on this watch are no different to those on the standard Hydroconquest apart from the yellow tip on the end of the seconds hand, really helping it to stand out. Then you have all of the usual dial features such as the Longines logo, the movement type, and the water resistance.

In my opinion the colourful bezel is what really sells this watch. Just like the minute track on the dial, the unidirectional black ceramic bezel also features the colours of the logo. This really unifies the bezel and the dial. Around the perimeter of the bezel there are stainless steel teeth to give an easy grip.

The 41 mm case and case-back are made from a combination of polished and brushed stainless steel, which adds some contrast and dimension to the watch. The caseback is also engraved with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games logo, as well as “Limited Edition - 1 out of 2022”. The crown is screw-in and features the Longines logo.

This watch comes with an oyster style bracelet, made from both polished and brushed stainless steel. This compliments the casing of the watch perfectly. The bracelet sports a double safety folding clasp with an integrated diving extension piece to keep this baby nice and secure.

Now onto the technical stuff. This watch contains an automatic self-winding caliber L888 movement. It’s said that the movement uses a silicone balance-spring which helps maintain excellent precision timekeeping and a long life span. This watch has a power reserve of around 72 hours, and a water resistance to 30 bar.

All in all, this watch combines both a sporty and classic look. A high-precision watch, perfect for athletes, that looks super stylish and unique; I think this piece has been really well designed and is a great tribute to the strong relationship between Longines and the Commonwealth Games. If you are a collector, an athlete, or simply just love how this watch looks I suggest you get your hands on one quickly. Thanks for reading, have a great week!
